Significance of Social Media and Parenting in Today’s Society

Social media changes many factors in today’s society. The E-Book that I am writing is going to focus on the impact that social media is having on parents of children ages 0-5. I am looking into the different types of media, for example Instagram, TikTok, and even YouTube, that parents turn to for advice and see how that correlates to how they are raising their families. I hope to show new parents that social media is not the be all end all when it comes to turning to for advice. It is important for parents to see that the comparisons are real in this new and fragile period in their lives.

Who

The main group of people that are going to be affected by my topic is parents. The parents are my main focus of this project. Parents are utilizing the media for help and advice however it is creating a double standard on how their family should look. It is creating this clean picture of a perfect household where the children are well behaved and the same behavioral tactics work for every single child around the world. Which is not the case at all. New parents are some of the most vulnerable people in the world because they are navigating this new responsibility and they have to figure out what works as they go. Even though there are so many resources out there that are affecting their decisions, every child and every family is different.

Unanswered Questions

There are a few unanswered questions that I am looking into answering within this project. The first one being, how do the constant comparisons of how you are raising your child to the way the media is telling you to affect burnout? Another large one is Is the media creating one singular standard for parenting? Social media is creating one look for parenting. Showing the one best way to raise your child, I want to look into how that is affecting different types of parenting. The biggest question that I am looking into is almost the expectation versus the reality of what parents are using on social media.
